Dear @devnihil,Thanks for your reply. I did the test as you mentioned using
curl. You are right.But the actual problem is, in search console, I have added the sitemap_index.xml which google has read and google is showing this URL as “Duplicate without user-selected canonical”. I am not sure what action I need to take for this.

https://hoofdpijnnet.nl/sitemap_index.xml. I am able to see the page in the mentioned URL with statusHTTP/2 200. There is no issue.I have also faced similar issue. But after sometimes when I try, google was able to fetch and things started to work. So in case if you faced this issue immediately after added to search console, just wait for sometimes and try again.
One more thing to consider, if you have just changed any dns or ns records. It will also take few minutes or hours depending on ttl.
I also had similar issue after I upgraded one of my site. Eventually I was able to track the issue using the error log. The best way to find the issue is, enable error log and see what is logged as issue. This way it will be easier to crack down the root cause.
