Thanks checking the overflow logo option appears to have solved the issue.

I checked on another device and it seems to have come out as I’d have hoped. Refreshing the page on the previous device didn’t help, but I cleared the cache and cookies and that seems to have sorted the problem.

I have updated to 1.7.3 as mentioned however, the text in the collapsed menu is still black on grey and it is not obvious where this can be changed in the template customisation.
I’m fairly new to wordpress so I may be missing something. Any suggestions?
