Problem fixed. I deactivated a bunch of my plugins to see if they were causing problems and as soon as I did that I was able to activate Akismet. Thanks for the help.
thanks so much – that was the problem! it had worked fine with the previous version of wordpress, so i guess i just assumed it would work fine with this one, too.
