I must confess, my expertise stops at html. I tried replacing bloginfo (‘name’) with echo ‘title line one
title line 2′ (with and without the blog title filled in on the settings page) and see no change–except there’s nothing there when the title is blank in Settings. So I’m guessing some other command is calling on the Settings title value? What am I looking for here, and what do I need to do?

I’ve now replaced the MySQL database as well (fresh install; empty database) because it seems to have been modified at about the time things stopped working–and still nothing works.
