To follow-up with myself, I was having a problem where the JW Player logo was showing in IE only but at least the player was appearing across all browsers. This IE problem was caused by me replacing the latest non-licensed version with a licensed version that evidently did not feature IE support. By using a more current, licensed version, the player showed in all browsers. However, I had a bare-bones video player with a JW logo displaying only in IE at that point.

I changed my skin from Stijl to Newtube for the sake of it being more obvious that video files are buffering when you’ve clicked play. I took the night off, cleared my caches, and tried again today and now the player shows correctly across all browsers.

I know damn well I won’t be the only person to run into similar problems with this stuff, so I hope I’ve helped someone.

PS- Looking at the support history for this plug-in by Longtail Video member[s], I can’t help but shake my head. They seem to answer only the trivial questions like how to align the player. Anything other than that and you might as well take stabs at it yourself. With so many others players now that feature fall-back support, it’s a wonder why more people haven’t tried other players. I probably would’ve if I didn’t have licensed versions as it were.

When I had this problem, I forgot to do the most basic of troubleshooting diagnostics. Within the plugin itself, there is an option to “update” to the latest version of JW Player. I did this and then tested in IE. The player worked just fine. So, this seemed to indicate that my licensed replacement copy of the player was the issue.

Not realizing it made any difference what version of the player it was, I finally updated the player from a licensed copy of JW Player 5.10.2295, to a licensed copy of 5.8.2011. This version of the player does seem to work across all browsers.

So, if you are not seeing the player in IE but you are seeing it in other browsers, try updating the player in the plugin options first. That way you have a control to work with and you know anything that fails is something you just added.

    Still One Problem:

The only fluke seems to be that when playing in IE, the player shows the watermark and does not use my selected skin (as if it were using a fall-back player or preferences that I’ve selected). This is annoying for anyone who has a license. It’s getting late here, so I may not investigate this much more tonight. But I’m hoping Longtail has some suggestions for this. I don’t know why the IE fall-back version of the player should be any different?
