the first mod using FTP did not work due to user id authorization within my Dreamhost shared hosting account (user error)

I was editing the file by making a local copy, adding the <?php wp_footer(); ?> line just before the </body> line and then FTPing up to my sites directory. That did not seem to work even after activating another theme and switching back. Not sure why.

But used the WordPress Theme Editor under Appearance and modified the file the same way and that did the trick. Stats have been back working for the last two days.

If you upgrade to WordPress 2.3.1, you can add WordPress tags using the “Keywords” field in Windows Live Writer (WLW).

I had a similar problem but when upgrading to 2.3.1, I switched over to using the SVN installation method to make upgrades easier. However, I forgot to copy my .htaccess from my old directory to my new directory I setup with SVN. I just updated my permalinks option and that fixed the problem.

Eureka! I had the same problem with 2.3.1 and just figured it out. WordPress tags in Windows Live Writer are “keywords”. You can expand the bottom frame of the WLW window by clicking on the chevron (two ^ over each other) next to the “Set publish date” field. Then the “Keywords:” will be just below the “Set Categories” field. I found a post by Joseph Scott talking about the implementation last evening, but didn’t realize that he was using “keywords” literally.

Have you looked at WP-SimpleViewer? It does more than I think you’re asking for, but worth a look. It is more like a simple Gallery-type plugin and I’m not sure if it could be put into a sidebar widget.
