Sort of resolved: I uninstalled all plugins…Jetpack appeared to be the culprit…but not 100% sure…
Further update:
I can completely change the theme, and it displays as it first did…
Update: I did a full uninstall and reinstall…I published a post and it was visible when logged out — but the changes made to the appearance (uploaded header, background, look) are not “sticking” (they show when clicking permalinked posts, and show when I am logged in, but do not show when logged out.
