The only problem I’ve seen with Chan’s is same with many other plug-ins. They are a total mess in Admin.

Chan’s works well, but because I’m running two backup plugins, it’s hard to remember which is which in Admin! Chan’s creates control sections under the “Database” item in the Admin menu, while Matzko’s creates a page under “Tools” — yet there are control items for “WP-DBManager” in both sections!

I’ve had to write a mini-manual that I can refer to each time I go in there to manage the two! I wish programmers would pay a bit more attention to the user interface. But that’s begging for better free food! Kudos to both these guys for making these tools avail for free!

I’ve been using Matzko’s backup utility for years. It always seems to backup to the server okay, and I can ftp the backups to my local pc. It’s a nice plugin, except…

Periodically, it will stop e-mailing backups to me, for weeks, for no apparent reason. This has happened several times since I first installed it. Then, again for no apparent reason, it starts e-mailing again. The e-mail function has been down now for weeks. I’ve tried uninstall/re-install, resetting the parameters, etc. Nothing jumpstarts it.

I also use Lester Chan’s WP-DBManager. (I like redundant backups!) I’ve never had a problem with it. It reliably backs up to the server AND e-mails the backups to me. (I have no affiliation with either programmer.)

I’ll leave Matzko’s backup running a bit longer, but if it doesn’t start e-mailing again, I’ll remove it and try something else. Too bad. I know it’s free, so I’m not complaining, but for such a popular plugin, it’s a shame he hasn’t updated it.

BTW, if your backups hang, his suggestion to increase the time for MOD_EVASIVE_DELAY has worked for me.

Problem solved. Ipstenu, you nailed it. Thanks! I pressed HARD back at Jumpline on the mod_security setting, and after multiple techs told me there WAS no problem, one tech figured it out.

Here’s the info he posted on my ticket. (I substituted [OMITTED] for anything that might compromise the server.) You’ll get a laugh. I’m not technical enough to appreciate it in detail, but it seems to me something tripped a software switch. It seems someone tried to hack the server so they shut down my site??? What do you make of this?

Thanks again — you helped me push the right button to get them to fix this! Perhaps this will help someone else.

    Nick,

    Something is tripping

[Thu Dec 08 18:06:04 2011] [error] [client 98.221.211.105] ModSecurity: Access denied with code 406 (phase 2). Invalid UTF-8 encoding: invalid byte value in character at REQUEST_HEADERS:Cookie. I’ve added your domain to be ignored by mod_security. See if that helps.

    Thanks

@ipstenu: I’m ahead of you on that one. I’ve asked my host whether mod_security is enabled. No answer yet. Your version of the question is better because it’s more general (“any changes/upgrades?”) – and techs tend to be very literal. I’ll report when they respond.

In the meantime, I’m getting hot and heavy with another web host. My host has pulled this before — they change server settings without notice. (Last winter they moved my site to another server without telling me… disaster.) I’d welcome recommendations. The hosts that charge <$10/mo don’t like the CPU usage I need… so I’m at the next level, but not quite at a dedicated server. But this is for another thread… sorry!

Still would like to fix this… I’m worried that it really is something with WP… Thx again.

UPDATE: One of my subscribers uses IE8 and she’s on a different ISP from me. She can access the blog, but she can’t post a comment and graphics don’t appear. How’s that for weird?

I’ve considered reinstalling WP, but the fact that the blog functions normally in Foxfire tells me the blog is fine. I’ve done no MSFT updates since 3 weeks ago.

    The fix is described here:
    http://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/an-appropriate-representation-of-the-requested-resource-wp-adminoptionsphp?replies=10

This fix is also described elsewhere, and it doesn’t seem to work for others. I haven’t tried it because the problem with my blog is not across the board — it seems to happen only in IE.

    Jonathan,

Good suggestion — thanks. But that’s not it. I tried Kubrick and Twenty Ten — no dice. They both work in Firefox, but not in IE9. I frankly think my web host did something funky to my (shared) server setup, or another user corrupted something on the server. Because one minute I could access the blog on IE9, the next minute I couldn’t. (The techies at HostICan/Jumpline can’t replicate the problem on their Ubuntu pcs, so their conclusion is, “There is no problem.”

Just doesn’t sound like a WordPress problem, but I’m not a WP expert by a longshot! That’s why I put it up here, hoping for some insight.

    Nick

Thanks for the tip about Backup Buddy – it may be worth the price. I’m tired of “free but buggy.” You get what you pay for! This may save me a lot of time and worry.

You’re welcome. Do you have any idea what causes the thing to hang like that? Does yours e-mail your backups to you?

Have you used any of the other backup plugins successfully? I don’t like wondering whether it worked today…! Thx.

@sculley: Good luck. I’ve been using WordPress Database Backup plugin for quite some time — 2 years+?

It works sporadically. Sometimes it sends the backup to the e-mail address you specified. Sometimes it dumps it to your wp-content directory on your server. Check to see if there’s a directory in your wp-content directory (on your server) named “backup-nnnn” where “nnnn” is a number. Your backups may be there. I download mine to my pc and delete them from the server. But I’m not comfortable leaving backups on the server.

When I choose the radio button (in WP Admin) to send the backup to e-mail, it doesn’t “take.” The button clears by itself. Later on, sometimes I start getting the backups in my e-mail.

It’s very flaky that way. I’m now using WP-DB Manager in addition to Database Backup. We’ll see which one does the best job, and then the other is getting deleted.

We can’t complain too much about free plugins, can we? But we can certainly share our experiences. I wish you the best.

Count me as another user whose backup plugin periodically breaks and doesn’t backup. Any suggestions on another plugin for backing up?

I think it’s great that developers post their plugins for free use – and I’m glad to contribute when I find a useful utility. But I can’t understand why this plugin is so highly rated when so many people have the same problem and the author never responds. (Not that he’s got any obligation – I get that. But no one made him publish it. Why do this if you’re not going to support it?)

@galbaras: Yours is the only identification of the problem and the only solution I’ve been able to find. However, I’m not a PHP expert by a long shot! I wonder if you would explain exactly how to make this modification so this plugin will work? Thanks for your consideration, and if you don’t have time to do this, thanks anyway for pointing out the problem!

@macmacken: Well, don’t consider it resolved. My WordPerss Database Backup periodically “breaks.” I have it set to e-mail me a backup daily. It’ll work for weeks, then inexplicably stop for several weeks. Then start again. In the meantime, I have to backup manually. So monitor your backup log regularly. Mine stopped working two weeks ago and I cannot find a solution. It seems many people have this problem, yet this plugin is so highly rated.

    dougjam,

I tried what you did. Added <param name=”autoplay” value=”false”>, saved, tested. WMP still starts playing automatically. When I go back and check the HTML, the code I added is gone! Tried again and again, but that code keeps disappearing.

How’d you manage to make it “stick”?? Thanks!

(This is very frustrating. As for TinyMCE, I didn’t install TinyMCE in my WP 2.71. Where’d the player come from??)

I’m not sure if this will help anyone who did an update to 2.6.5… but when I updated to 2.6.2 my Write toolbar got fried. A helpful user suggested an idea that worked for me. Thread is here.

It was a simple fix. I’ve gotten a lot of help on this forum, so if this helps anyone, I’m happy.
