OK, I had more success. Here is the error I get in my error.log when the issue occurs.

I think the last line is the error that’s causing the “critical error” message.

When I look at my server logs I don’t see any error. I have tried several different tacks on this, including enabling debugging on my WP install. Can you recommend a good plugin for getting debug information?

LOL – you’re right, whomai … I’m a luser. Anyway, I now have a favicon. Thanks for the link to the instructions.

Duddha – thanks for the good comments. I plan to put a blogroll of some kind on that “empty” right sidebar.

I will also start moving away from images that are linked from other sites. I did that for today’s post – copied the Wikipedia image to my own site and hosting it there.

Do you have any recommendations for how to make a favicon – some site where I can get that? Or instructions for how to use one with WordPress?

    Thanks again!

    Nils

I didn’t have any problem loading it – I think the site looks good. Although the cartoons are not quite to my taste. I think that means I’m too old.

Realized I didn’t mention two things:

    1. I’m using a theme recommended by Blogsessive in this post, called Neoclassical. I’ll be replacing the default images (that say “Neoclassical Theme for WordPress” with some of my own as soon as I can.

    2. I’m using a plug in called “Add to Any” to support Digg’ing, Reddit’ing, etc.

Comments on those plugins would be interesting as well.

    1. I would suggest having your excerpts a bit longer.

    2. I agree that the big blocks of non-existent ads are a bit off-putting. I’d suggest putting something else in those spots (images, links to posts) until you have ads to publish. Or you could just put some Google ads there for the time being, and add a small link below to the effect of “Click if you want to advertise here” or something.

I think your site looks quite good, and I didn’t have any loading problems. Good luck with it. Note: I didn’t read very many articles, since it’s kind of outside my areas of interest right now – although if I had an iPod I’d probably be very interested in your article about the next gen design.
