Regarding your concern, the only way for now is to go to forty-four/views/page-404.php and remove the search form there. Regarding your concern, can you turn on the WP_DEBUG and check if there is any error. Also, did you check the hide background image? The default text color is white so it may not be visible if you hide the background image.
