re tradeoff against usability, am wondering how mailchimp and the like, which stores all data on their servers, do it 🙂

Quite true but wouldn’t it be more prudent to store subscription user data and management into another interface/database rather than on the WP admin one itself? That would create a better layer and the subscribers wouldn’t have to touch wp-admin 🙂
