As it happens, I just noticed that when I’m editing a post crated by TwitterTools, there’s a box labeled “Format” that’s set to “Status.” When I changed that item to “Standard,” the broadcasting process worked as I expected.

Twitter Tools starts archiving from the time you enable it. It does not try to download your entire tweet history. However, there is code in Twitter Tools that can be scripted to download and import tweets. You can put together the pieces with your own code to create the combination of features you desire. What happened to the digest features?
The digest features never worked reliably and were removed in version 3.0. Another developer is welcome to make a plugin that uses the underlying features of Twitter Tools to implement digest features.What happened to the default hashtags feature?
These are no longer needed in 3.0+ since the default broadcast message is now fully customizable in the Social settings. Add your hashtags to your default broadcast message template.How do I use a URL-shortener like bit.ly?
Since Twitter Tools no longer does broadcasting, this is really a question for Social. As noted in that FAQ, Social uses the built-in “short URL” feature of WordPress that supports any number of services via their plugins.Forum: Plugins

Social failed to broadcast the blog post “Short Stories: 10 Tips for Creative Writers” to one or more of your Social accounts.

Possible fixes:

In reply to: [Social] [Plugin: Social] Only for blog posts, not for pages?While I have not yet had the time to teach myself the WordPress API, I have posted some details about how to hack the source code to get the desired effect.
Pages are considered a special type of post that is hierarchical. The Social plugin has a line that specifically excludes hierarchical posts from getting the social treatment. I just commented out the bit of code that checks to see whether a post is hierarchical.
Yes, I will probably have to re-do that hack every time the Social plugin produces an update, but for now, I can live with the kludge.

Like Viktor, I’d really like to use Social with pages, and like Viktor I would appreciate a bit more guidance for how to implement the solution you described, Alex.
If there’s someone else with the skill to turn Alex’s answer into a set of instructions, there are at least two Social users who’d be grateful.
