    But where is it coming from?

    It’s not in the header, index or css.

    I did some experimenting placing my style sheet into the default theme and it loaded. Eventually I found out that my style sheet was named differently in the theme I’m creating.

    WP will load “style.css” and not load “styles.css”.

    That was the issue.
