In reply to: blogroll spam on WordPress 2.3Let me stress that this is NOT a fault in WP 2.3. I had this in 2.1. It’s just that most everyone has upgraded and since their upgrades are new and this phenomena is new, they assume that they are connected. They are not.
My web host now has a post on their pages saying that not only WordPress but also Joomla and other CMS systems have been targeted in the same manner.
They say that in most cases it is because the file configuration.php has been readable and even in some cases writable by others.
I have now changed the permissions to make it unwritable, but WP doesn’t work at all unless this file is readable to all. It needs to be at least 444. This is as you all know where the database password is openly written, and the database is where the links to the spam has been entered.
My host’s web page goes on to say that we need to change the MySQL password for the database. This I have done, but the new password is just as openly written in the config file as the old one.
They also say that it is a good idea to upgrade to MySQL 5.x, but I don’t know if WP will run smoothly on that? I remember there was sometalk about that a while ago, but I cannot find anything now.
I’m starting to think that it’s a weakness with the very construction of the WP configuration file system, having a password written in plain text like that. Someone has finally figured out how to make use of it and this can be the beginning of many other more serious attacks.

In reply to: blogroll spam on WordPress 2.3Hmmm. How do I disable the POST request like you suggest?
I thought I had it beat but they’re back and this time they haven’t just added their links, they have DELETED every single link I have in every category!

In reply to: Visual Buttons not showingHmm. Can somebody tell me what those italics-, b-quote, and so on-buttons are called so that I know what term to search for?
Thanks.

In reply to: Visual Buttons not showingNone of this helps for me (2.3.1). The visual editor does not work and the entire field of buttons like blockquote, italics, etc is gone.
After saving a draft, there is a plain blue text link that says preview, located inside the post text window itself, in the upper right corner. Part of the text is sticking outside of the box and it does not look right.

In reply to: blogroll spam on WordPress 2.3I have the same situation but it has nothing to do with version 2.3.
I hadn’t upgraded since 2.1.3 when I noticed this today. I then upgraded to 2.3.1 and of course it did nothing.
The odd thing is that the blogroll in the sidebar includes one of my post categories (“Projects”) that I have never set to be a link category. Yet the links count on the Blogroll/Categories page is my number of regular posts in that category + the number of spam links that only show up in the sidebar.
If I delete this unwanted link category, I would think that my posts go as well since they are included in the count and the category in both places have the same ID.
But who added “Projecs” as a link category? I have no users.
Temporary solution: All spam I have is in this one category which shouldn’t even be in the sidebar. Simply excluding it in the list makes the spam invisible.

In reply to: Can one category have a completely different header?Thank you all who has helped out!
Just got another mail from the guy I’m helping with the weblog and now he has changed his mind and don’t want a different header after all.
So that’s the end of that. 🙂

In reply to: Can one category have a completely different header? Thanks. That link is already listed above tho. It is the page I have used in order to try different things out.
My problem is that I don’t really know any coding. I just sit and stare at it for a while and then it seems like there is a pattern to where there should be a semicolon and where there should be a colon. But I don’t understand any of it so it’s hard to compose from scratch.
At the moment I don’t even know if it can be done technically. If wordpress needs to always have one header or if it can work with two. I need to load a different menu altogether and not just images or something that can be done with styles.

In reply to: Can one category have a completely different header? Can’t find anything that fits my dillemma.
Is it possible to have the following function?:
If category is blabla and page is id 5,6,7 then get header.
If not, get header number 2 instead?
And how would I write that? Because my various attempts merely crash everything.

In reply to: Can one category have a completely different header? Thanks moshu! That was a very inspirational link!
I need to read further tomorrow after some sleep, but so far I fear that this will help me with varying styles and not varying the header php file itself which has regular html links in it.
If the header is always the same header then i suppose maybe I can put the menu somewhere external and then call on different versions of it if the current page id is so and so. Somehow.
I don’t actually understand much of this yet, but now at least I have a lead to follow. Thanks!

In reply to: Can one category have a completely different header? Thanks HandySolo. But I can’t find the answer to my question there. Or, if it’s there, I don’t understand it.

In reply to: Text displayed incorrectlyProblem seems to have solved itself. Could have been a bad version of a Firefox extension. Who knows.

In reply to: Character encoding wrong in embedded formBump. Still no solution. Having the same problem with another form now too.
Would love it if anyone knew why all php scripts relying on pages outside of the embedded code seem to get broken charsets if the main header of the page has a set text encoding.

In reply to: Custom smilies?Thank you for answering!
I did find the More Smilies plugin after posting here, but I haven’t tried it yet since the comments to that plugin are riddled with people with different Fatal Errors as a result of trying it. Seems a bit excessive just for a few smilies.
I don’t really need more than the default ones anyway, but it would be good to have them appear a bit fresher than the default ones.

In reply to: Gravatars 2 and adminOk… so now I have learnt that nobody’s Gravatars work, except for the ones who were registered under the old system and not on the new Gravatar 2.0 system. So that’s that.
I think the fact that the local avatar doesn’t link locally is still caused by the pluging though.

In reply to: referer on sidebar? You have given me a few things to think about here. Maybe the reason why my incoming links haven’t gotten spammed is that not even the spammers know that I exist. I seem to have had exactly 3 sites linking to me in the past 12 months or so. And about as many comments.
I’m not really deep enough into the blogosphere to understand what all these external things do. I’ve tried to look into a few of them but I only ended up feeling stupid. And displaying a lot of stats about no visitors and no interest will only be depressing.
It’s a lot like those counters we used to put on our pages a decade ago, isn’t it? The ones where we had to cheat eventually and start on a few thousand because the counters only really showed that nobody cared. Only now it’s called DeLiCious or Tecnocrati and whathaveyou. I don’t understand it all. I think I’m getting old. I have apparently now burnt a feed or something. That’s always something. And I have a list of top commentators. (The current record being 2 comments) 🙂
