Thanks for your follow up. but no, the issue is still there.
the snippets plugin adds that <?php automatically. i also added it to the functions file with no luck. would you be able to dive into the admin area yourself to have a look around?

The code worked, but then the code itself appeared above the top black bar. I tried putting the code in by using the snippets plugin and then within the functions.php file itself, and both options had the same effect.

Super cool! it was, indeed, a conflict. I’ve got a testing site with one single different plugin from the live site, and what do you know? it was the conflict source. FYI, it was called SEO by Squirrly.
