Fixed it (kind of)- I used:

.navbar-wrapper .navbar .social-block {
display:none;
}

.span7.inside.site-description  {display:none;
}

I don’t have the tagline now (don’t really want one anyway) and don’t have the social icons but I’m sure there must be a work around there, i.e. putting them as menu icons? Will cross that bridge when I get to it! Thanks for the help guys!
By the way, setting navbar-inner max height kind of worked, it made the navbar the side I wanted it but placed it above the menu (so the menu was outside of the navbar).

This is what I mean, as you can see I haven’t really done anything on the site yet!
