Addendum:
This issue seems to stem from using a Win 2k server while the files are located on a mac share. Installing on a *nix server worked as expected. Yeesh!!!
I had the same problem, however, if your run the install from /blogfolder/wp-admin/install.php instead of /blogfolder/index.php you should be able to make the install go, though it will not suppress the SQL errors on the install page.
