Adding the images as smilies and treating them as such did the trick. I just had to manually add the image files into the /wp-includes/images/smilies folder and to manually insert their strings into smilies_init() in wp-includes/functions.php.
In time, I’d also like to remove those shadowy borders around the image in order to make them look more like inline icons.
