 * Adding the images as smilies and treating them as such did the trick. I just 
   had to manually add the image files into the `/wp-includes/images/smilies` folder
   and to manually insert their strings into `smilies_init()` in `wp-includes/functions.
   php`.

 * In time, I’d also like to remove those shadowy borders around the image in order
   to make them look more like inline icons.
