Jetpack just issued a new update. It fixed the problem.
I’ve got the same problem: no lower-case letters “i” in the comments all the way back to the beginning of time.
I first noticed about 4 PM PST.
It seems it happened after I updated Jetpack.
The i’s still show up in my comment management section. So they’re there, they’re just not visible to the public.
Here is an example from a few days ago: the i’s were showing until today, when they disappeared:
