Version 2.5.5 leads to the following fatal error in a multisite installation:

PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 130968 bytes) in <path>/wp-content/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/common.php on line 412

You should be able to revert to 2.5.4. See if disabling the debugging option fixes it please.

I have of course reverted back to 2.5.4. “Debugging” in the EWWW settings is not (and was not) enabled.

that’s strange, because line 412 is a debugging function, but it isn’t supposed to do much of anything unless the debugging option is actually enabled. Only one other thing I can think to try then.
Can you download a fresh copy from here and see what happens:
