So disable those plugins. Not all plugins are going to be compatible with 2.8. Look for updated versions of the plugins.
Also, if the visual editor isn’t working, then disable all plugins and see if that fixes it. Many older plugins can break the newer versions of WordPress, due to javascript updates and changes.
As I stated, I have done everything I could think of. That included disabling those plugins and then the others. It appears not that any plugin is breaking WP but that some conflict that did not exist with 2.7 is causing WP to break these plugins.
It can’t conflict with itself. So what “conflict” are you talking about? If you disabled the plugins, then there’d be no conflict.
If you’re using Gears in your browser, try disabling that too.
I did not say it conflicted with itself. I said there is a conflict that did not exist with 2.7. The conflict would seem to be with editing plugins. There are also no functions showing using the visual tab even when all plugins are disabled. That speaks to a problem in 2.8. Perhaps that could be construed as conflicting with itself.
Also, when I have entered text using the html tab a switch to the visual tab shows collections of 3-4 red dots scattered widely where the text should be, nothing but those red dots.
I have no idea what gears is.
Okay, let me try to explain this better.
1. If there’s a conflict with a plugin, then disable the plugin. It doesn’t matter what the plugin is or does. It’s the plugin’s problem.
2. If the visual editor is not loading right or something like that, then either a) files are missing from the installation or b) something else is preventing your browser from downloading some files from your site.
In the case of A, just make sure all the WP files are on the server. A halfway upgrade, for example, where some files were missed can cause this issue.
In the case of B, well, there’s no easy fix until you find out why the files can’t make it from your website to your browser. Could be a lot of reasons. Old or bad plugins are the most common reason. Weird themes are less common, but also possible.
As I suspected, the problem was with 2.8. None of the recommended cures worked. I just installed 2.8.1 and the problem no longer exists.
