on one of my sites, I had to change my administator account email address, as it had the same email address as my regular user account (using openconnect SSO)

anyway, everything was working fine, until i change the email address. after that I login with the user/password which works. I get the 2fa prompt and it fails not error message prestented just sent back to enter user/pass with a blank error message.

i had to disable wordfence (by renaming folder) and get back in. I then deactivated and reactiated 2fa for my account. Issue pursists. I did more digging and found a reference to putting a space at the end of my password and then putting the 2fa code there. and that worked. its a decent stopgap. But won’t work for the long term.

any ideas on what could be the problem? i have 3 other admins that need to do the same thing. right now all of their 2fa is working normally. but I’m afraid if they change their email address the same problem will occur.

Hi @drjoeward, thank-you for your message detailing the steps you’ve tried so far.

You can indeed place the 2FA code at the end of your password, but the likelihood is that there’s a plugin or Javascript conflict that is preventing the correct login process from displaying in the first place. May I ask if you’re running the latest release of Wordfence too? We recently fixed an issue that sounds similar to the one you’re having where hitting the “return” key on your keyboard and clicking the “Login” button presented different behavior, one of which was returning to the login screen with no error message.

To check for possible Javascript conflicts, test by disabling all plugins except for Wordfence and reverting to a default theme like Twenty Twenty-Two. Does the login process work as expected then? If so, re-enabling your plugins and theme one-by-one should show at which stage the failing 2FA reoccurs. You can always check your browser console for red errors during the login process. Feel free to share any you’re seeing here by using a service like Snipboard.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

There were no browser console issues or strange javascript on the page. It was apparently bad auto-fill data in my browser and with everything going on (I just migrated two sites for our organization) i skipped the basic “try another browser” test. because I only have one with my password manager attached.
