    Hi,

I have pretty much locked myself out of my wordpress website. I couldn’t remember my password, as it’s been changed multiple times. I should have given up and used the “forgot password” link, but I was too stubborn and now I’m locked out and getting a “403 Forbidden” error.

My Webhost said it is the Ithemes security plugin that is causing it. When I could get into my plugins (which is hit and miss) I tried to disable the plugin, but when I click on the “deactivate” link for Ithemes the “403 Forbidden” message appears. My webhost said it had something to do with my IP address and the IThemes plugin.

I would really appreciate some help.

    Thanks

Hi @saranee, thank you for reaching out, and I’m sorry to hear about that. To login back to your site, temporarily disable the iTSec modules by adding the code found in this article. If you don’t have access to your FTP/File Manager, you may contact your hosting provider about this.

Once logged in, please remove your IP address from the Banned Users card (Security Dashboard). If it’s not there, please check your htaccess file and remove your IP address from there. Next, I would recommend adding your IP address to the “Authorized Hosts” list to avoid getting locked out again (Security Settings > Configure > Global Settings). Also, please update your user’s password on the WP Profile page. Lastly, remove the line of code you just added to activate the iTSec modules again.

    I hope this helps.

Well, it was working last night. I removed my IP from the Deny list in the htaccess files, and followed the instructions in your email. Then removed the code in the wp config file. I was able to get onto the dashboard and make all my changes.

I opened up the website this morning and am back to the 404 Forbidden screen. I am leaving on a trip today and won’t be able to work on this until I return. I will try again next week.

Hi @saranee, thanks for getting back. Could you please verify if your IP address was added to the Authorized Hosts list in the Global Settings?

I just went thru the process again to get past the error message.

In the Global Settings under “Authorized Hosts” I typed my IP address into the big box and saved it.

Also, above the box there is a check box that says “automatically temporarily authorize hosts” and that box is checked. I can uncheck it if I need to. Just let me know.

I have a screen shot of the page, but don’t know how to apply it to this chat.

I did notice when I went back, in one of the .htaccess pages, my IP was still listed as “deny”. I thought I had deleted it and saved it, but my computer has been slow, so maybe it didn’t get saved. It is saved for sure now. Maybe that is what was still causing the issue.
