after installation and changing URL in settings, I get a 404 error saying the page doesnt exist when going to the new login url

Can you be more specific?
The Default URL is yoursite.com/login If you changed it (recommended) it should be yoursite.com/whateveryouputinthesettings

I changed it to yoursite.com/pagename…when i tried to visit that url, it gave me a 404 error.

it appears the plugin has a problem with iThemes security. I deleted it, and installed wordfence. now it works.

There is probably a conflict between the plugin and iThemes security, since iThemes also has an option to hide the backend and default login page.
