• Hello all,

Please help a newbie with installation.

    I have a domain on 1&1 webhosting, http://www.industrydoc.com.
I switched it to linux hosting yesterday in order to install WordPress. (Needed to do this in order to get MySQL.)

Created a MySQL database, got the name, user & pw.

Downloaded the WordPress files, edited the wp_config_sample file as directed, except changed localhost to db1752.perfora.net (found this in a 1&1 help file.)

Uploaded the files to the account to first a subdirectory named WordPress, then moved it all to root.

All attempts to get to install.php in /wp-admin gets me a 404.

    Found a blog that recommended creating a .htaccess file containing php_value display_errors = "1"

    Still just a 404 file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Because your site is new and you have no posts or pages to lose, why don’t you reinstall a fresh copy of WordPress straight to the root?

Moving it from the “WordPress” subdirectory, to the root, may have caused some mis-configurations.

I think this will save you time, rather than trying to figure out the fix.

This is exactly the error I got, and I haven’t been able to fix it. I deleted everything, even the MySQL database, and started over. I put up a 1-page site, index.html, and took a breather of a few weeks, to screw up my courage.

Today, I installed WordPress, again. After reinstalling, instead of a 404 error, I still get my 1-page website (index.html).

WHAT is the missing step that will make the WordPress blog actually appear on my URL/site?

    I get my old, 1-page website (index.hmtl).

rename or delete that so WordPress’ index.php can take over.
