404 Error while using permalinks

You can check to see if your mod_rewrite is enabled on your server.
You can talk to your host, or upload a file into your root with this :
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
and check the php settings.

Or, perhaps backup your htaccess file, and upload the default one :
