4.1 eats the visual editor!
-
I manage over 10 sites that use WordPress on different servers and all of them have lost the visual editor upon upgrading to 4.1. I tested it with Chrome, Firefox and IE so it’s not a browser problem. This is obliviously a issue with this version. I have read all the other support threads on this problem and mostly its like listening to a stuck record! I tried most of the Technics before just realizing I was wasting my time.To jump through all the trouble shooting hoops listed would be absurd. Like I mentioned, these sites are on different servers, so the only common link is WordPress 4.1. I am not a code writing person, but I can hope that someone will make a fix for this and share it with us.
I do want to thank everyone who has taken time to post to all the WordPress forums, for through these I have learned a great deal.
Nothing beats a free education!

Hi Jeff,
I too am not a coder. That said, I am a software test engineer. Thus, I’d love to help paint a picture of what it takes to reproduce the issue you are seeing. But, in order to do this I have a few questions.
Has this issue only occurred on sites updated to 4.1? And if you’ve only seen the issue after an upgrade, what build(s) did you upgrade from? I ask because I currently am running a brand new install of 4.1 via MAMP 3.0.7.3 and cannot reproduce using Mac Safari 8.0.3, Mac Chrome 39.0.2171.99 (64-bit), and Mac Firefox 35.0 with the following steps:
Steps taken:
1. Log in to site as administrator
2. Click Posts > Add New
3. Click Toggle Toolbar
–> no bugExpected to see toolbar during steps two and three. Expectations were successfully met.
Beyond my first question, what theme(s) are you using as well as what plugin(s) are active? Moreover, can you reproduce the issue with Twenty Fifteen set as the theme and all plugins deactivated? That last question being super important. Being that we want to rule out any kind of 3rd party integration issue.
Please feel free to add any necessary steps to my Steps taken above.
Thanks in advance!
Randy
by the way, are your sites on Pair Networks?
There’s a post here suggesting that servers using one of Plesk’s security features can interfere with the visual post editor in WordPress 4.1: http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/updated-to-wordpress-4-1-and-the-wordpress-editor-is-broken/
However we discovered the problem. We wanted to test the new centralized WordPress features in Plesk. And by enabling the security it messes up native WordPress scripts
http://cloud.righthere.com/image/420j0k0N421l
We disabled the security check on wp-includes and now the WordPress TinyMCE native editor works again.
It might be worth checking with your web host(s) that they are not using the same Plesk feature.
None of the sites are on the Pair network.
I’m talking about the visual editor for editing web pages thru the dashboard.
I have been doing all the upgrades as new versions come out. This was an upgrade from 4.0.1
All I get now is the tinymice? I can only see and edit the text. The Visual button has disappeared. The regular tool bar I used has disappeared too. Thought it might be the plugins or the theme until I saw that all the other sites are changed also.
I did try all the steps on one site: Turned off the 3 plugins and changed to the 2015 theme, but no success. I checked it on Firefox, Chrome and IE. I haven’t upgraded any of my browsers lately so It’s gotta be in the upgrade to 4.1.
The site I have been working with on this problem has Sweet Captcha, Contact form 7 and wp lighbox 2 plugins loaded. This site has bee up for over a year with no issues until this last WP upgrade. I even tried re-installing, no luck. This site has the “Trim” theme loaded.

I appreciate your help and efforts.so It’s gotta be in the upgrade to 4.1
Well, millions of people don’t have this same issue – and others have had problems but solved them, so it’s really not likely to be the upgrade itself.
Have you looked under your user profile to see if the Visual Editor is turned off there?
I haven’t upgraded any of my browsers lately so It’s gotta be in the upgrade to 4.1.
Actually, it is almost certainly in the *combination* of WordPress 4.1 and one of the themes or plugins that you are running on your sites.
You need to find the actual source of the problem, which is very likely a plugin. Is there anything else in common amongst these sites where you are experiencing this issue? Same plugins, perhaps? Same theme?
Just had the same issue : I desactivate the plug-in “qTranslate support for WooCommerce” and now the editor is back again …
Hope it helps !I am having the same issue of functionality of the visual editor when trying to create a post. I too have been updating regularly and am now running the latest WP version of 4.1. Trying another browser (use Safari), deactivating plug ins, changing back to PHP 5.3 (Pair Network) to no avail. Since I am not a coder, this is truly vexing. Any help?
I can support both MarieH225 Jeff Westfall I have been keeping WP up to date. Updated to 4.1 this morning and immediately had no visual editor for editing pages or posts and the window is blank even though the content is there when I switch to text view. I have tried everything Jeff has tried to no avail. Cleared cache cookies, updated everything, tried different browsers, different PCs, deactiving all plugins no luck. Hope someone can help.
@lawson1349,
to get full attention to your specific issue, my suggestion would be to start your own thread. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Thus one problem, on one setup is not indicative of the functionality and reliability of an application as a whole. To get the best attention to your specific issue as you deserve, please review how and where to post in this forum: http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Forum_Welcome#Where_To_PostHi Jeff,
I never saw an answer from you about making sure, in Users > Profile, that the “Disable the visual editor when writing” checkbox under Personal Options > Visual Editor is unchecked. Because, for sure, that would kill any kind of visual editor if the box were checked.
Beyond the above, I also haven’t yet got a reproducible case. That is, if you are still having the issue, please list the exact steps (i.e., 1. Do this …, 2. Do that …, etc.) you take to see the bug. If that entails updating from 4.0.1 to 4.1 then list those steps as well. Meaning only add the update if you cannot reproduce your issue simply installing WordPress 4.1 from scratch.
Bugs can be really slippery. That said, having a reproducible case is the first step towards a possible solution. Oh, and do be sure to list steps for a WordPress install that is running the default theme (e.g., Twenty Fourteen) and no active plugins. This way we rule out any kind of 3rd party integration issue for now.
Thanks much!
Sincerely,
Randy
P.S., Links to screenshots would be awesome too! 🙂
Just a little more information on my lost visual editor after 4.1 update. I am using theme Twenty Eleven. My visual editor is not disabled. I use a Mac. Thanks.
@marieh225 – please start your own thread as per the forum guidelines –
http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Forum_Welcome#Where_To_Post’
You can do so here:
https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting#postform
Start by deactivating all plugins – see if that changes it.
Hi Jeff,
Just wondering what the status of your issue is?
