Unfortunately, the logged errors only say that a customer 500 error page couldn’t be found.
Try manually resetting your plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.
If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This which will force the Default theme (WordPress 1.5 – 2.9.2) or the Twenty Ten theme (WordPress 3.0 and higher) to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.
Tried both theme name change and plugins disable and still can’t log-in as an admin.
It’s freaking me out, today i had to modify the site via MySQL Admin..
I need to fix this ASAP.
Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of the /wp-admin/ and /wp-includes/ directories with fresh copies from the download.
If that doesn’t work, contact your hosting provider and ask if they can give you any more details on that 500 error. It’s possible that their logs are a bit more detailed than the ones you have access to.
I am having a similar issue. Everything worked fine until one day i tried to log in and keep getting a 500 error after I enter my login information. I tried removing my plugins, htaccess file and custom theme without any luck of loggin in after each test. I also checked file permissions. They are all correct.
I did contact my host and they said that nothing changed with the server and they cannot support any wordpress questions. They said “must be a wordpress specific issue”. I then re-uploaded a new download of the WordPress files and still no luck.
This is so frustrating because it used to work, I didnt change anything, and now I cannot log on anymore. I havent even “launched” the site yet. Been working on adding content for months now.
