500 errors from Jetpack connection issues
-
Our hosting provider alerted us to a flood of 500 errors in our access log, and helped us isolate this line: /wp-json/wpcom/v2/memberships/status?source=gutenberg
“So what is happening here is that jetpack is trying to check some kind of your membership status with them and it is failing even if the JetPack is connected.”
Help, please!

Here is a screenshot of the first few errors. There are thousands of them, and they’re coming in about every second.
It looks like I can’t upload screenshots easily. I can go through setting everything up via Imgur (as per the instructions here) but I will wait to see if anyone actually needs the screenshots first.
Hi there,
I can see that you have installed Jetpack correctly, but there is one more thing you’ll need to do to, that look like it could be related to your issue.
We require a user-authenticated connection to WordPress.com. Jetpack is a plugin that allows you to use features we developed on WordPress.com on your self-hosted website through the Jetpack plugin. Since these features were built for WordPress.com sites, we need to connect your site via the Jetpack plugin to a WordPress.com account. You can find more details about this here:
https://jetpack.com/support/why-the-wordpress-com-connection-is-important-for-jetpack/
Please follow these steps to connect:
- Go to the Jetpack menu in your WP Admin dashboard
- Access your Jetpack → My Jetpack
- Scroll down to find the Connection area
- Click Connect your WordPress.com account to connect Jetpack to your WordPress.com account
Let us know when you have done this, and we can take another look at your Jetpack connection.
Also, it would be nice to see the error log you mentioned before.
Thanks.

Ok, thanks for the clear instructions. Before, it showed “Site connected”. Now it also says “Connected as irvinesisters (Owner).”
It looks like the errors are no longer coming in every second, although the older ones are still there.
Update: errors are still coming in, just not as quickly….
Hi @litp –
Can you share a recent example of the errors? How frequently are they coming in?
I set the log to show the last 1,000 errors, and it goes back 4 hours. So mathematically, we’re getting an average of 250/hour or about once every 15 seconds.

Hi @litp –
Could you provide us with a screenshot (or better yet plaintext) showing the 500 errors specifically and the references to Jetpack? In your most recent screenshot, it has logs from several different things and the only reference to Jetpack is a
200. I don’t see any references to the/wp-json/wpcom/v2/memberships/status?source=gutenbergfrom your first post.Once we have that information, we can take another look and escalate to our development team if needed.
Kinsta shows a maximum of 20,000 errors which at this point only goes back 10 hours. I don’t know how to filter them to look for Jetpack.
I’m looking through the log now while I wait for Kinsta to reply. I found this:

Here is the latest version of the error I originally posted

I now understand that the “200” entries I sent above are normal traffic. But according to Kinsta, we did get 3 5XX errors in the last 24 hours. It looks like they are 523 errors but I don’t have the actual coding.
