• I seem to have struck an unusual problem. I cannot update posts as each time I try I get “500 internal server error”.

Two days ago this began but was intermittent but I’m now completely unable to update anything. I have not changed anything in the last few months in the way of plugins, theme etc.

I can see my site just fine, I can navigate around WordPress admin, do almost anything else but I cannot update my posts.

I have been onto support for my host and they are perfectly able to update just fine and cannot replicate the problem.

I have increased disk space and increased bandwidth. I have tried it in three different browsers, cookies cleared, and I have tried on two different computers, all with the same result.

I have other WordPress sites on this host and they are working fine.

Any and all suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks

  • Not sure what may cause is, so here are the usual advice in such cases, in complexity and annoyment raising order, that you

    – change your blog’s theme to one of the default themes, and try again

    – deactivate all plugins (manually in the blog admin, or with http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F ) and try again. From past experience, it’s nice to note somewhere which were the inactive plugins that won’t need reactivating.

    – reinstall wordpress using the “Manual Update” section of http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Updating_WordPress
(I insist, this reinstallation, including the deletion of folders, does NOT threaten ANY of your data at all.)

    Hopefully, that might work…

Next would be asking your web host if your server logs show unusual mysql errors, or if the apache logs display errors. Or you ask them first if you’re in no hurry to fix it πŸ™‚

Hi Sabinoo, thanks. Yes I’ve tried the changing theme and deactivating plugins. No difference. Tried it with all plugins off, twenty 11 and htaccess at 777. No difference.

Haven’t asked the host about errors, I suppose that’s next but after over an hour on chat with them they might not want to waste a lot more time on me especially as it is all working fine for them. They can login just fine and use everything as normal, so from their end there’s no problem at all. It’s only my end.

    Cheers.

Who is the host? Link to your site?

Have you tried from another computer on another connection (ISP)?

    Hi Wpyogi, site is http://knifesharpenersguide.com/

I’ve tried on another computer but not from another connection as I don’t really have that option easily available. But the host (Hostgator) doesn’t get the error at all their end.

But I can update other wordpress sites that I have with Hostgator just fine, it’s just this one. The issue began intermittently at first but is now total and although my site is broken I cannot update any posts.

When the problem was intermittent I discovered that I could update posts but the update seemed to miss out some of the bottom half of the content. Very strange.

Just tried creating a new user and logging in with that. No different

Just did a wordpress admin wordpress reinstall, no different. Is that sufficient as a reinstall or do I need to do a manual one?

Actually looking at the posts that I have unsuccessfully tried to update and got the 500 error I see that something seems to have changed with the post as some more of the content is now missing. When I have had this problem I seem to be losing content with these attempts to update, and cannot update to restore the content.

Have you checked your database? I’d go back to deactivating plugins and switching to a default theme for a bit too. See if you get the same behavior.

Yes I did the deactivating plugins and switching to the default theme, no difference. I haven’t checked the database as I’m not a sufficiently technical user to know what to look for sadly. Thanks, totally stumped.
