500 internal server error on Apache 2.4

This plugin creates a .htaccess file in the upload directory which gives a 500 error.

Looking at the logs I see this:

wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha/.htaccess: allow not allowed here

I am using Apache 2.4.6 on a Ubuntu machine.

I’ve deleted wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha/.htaccess and commented out the code in the plugin file to get this working again – is there a better way?
