I am having this issue as well.
I am using WPEngine, if this matters at all?
I have used this plugin before and it was working fine, but when I put it on a new site, I got the 502 error.
I even went back to the site that I know it was working on, and it too came up with a 502 error. Not sure if this is tied to WP 5.5 or a plugin update caused it?
**EDIT**
Furthermore, I am using the “Other SMTP” option.
It might be because of a password change from the client, but I will update the comment accordingly when I find out if that is true

Hi @accupulse1 and @franco4785,
@accupulse1 are you maybe also hosting on WPEngine?
Please read through this forum thread: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/plugin-cant-connect-to-smtp-after-install-wp-5-5
Where you’ll find some more information about what is causing this issue.
There are no exact reasons why this is happening, but the same issue (site timeout when sending emails via SMTP) is happening with PHPMailer class bundled in WP 5.5., with our plugin disabled. So it looks like WPEngine has some issues with updated PHPMailer class in WP 5.5.
Take care!
