503 errors and emails not sending

Our woocommerce was working perfectly then suddenly (and without any updates/changes on our website) we have encountered several issues:
1. Orders and payments going through but customers reporting timeouts at the end of checkout.
2. New order/order confirmation emails not sending to us or customers (they appear in WP Mail Log but our host says they are not reaching the server to be sent). Contact forms and test emails still send without issue, so this appears to be a woocommerce specific problem.
3. When we try to tick off orders as complete the page times out and displays a 503 Service Unavailable error.
We have tried troubleshooting by deactivating all plugins/themes except the default theme and woocommerce, and deactivating our CDN, but all issues still occur.

I also have a staging site set up that I hadn’t synced in a while and is running an old version of our site from about 2 months ago, but this also has the same problems, so it doesn’t appear to be something we have changed on our end.

Our host (godaddy) assures us that there is no issue with the server and no changes were made to the server recently, so I’m at a loss as to what else might cause this.

Having exactly the same issue with a client. Need some assistance! All was working fine 2 days ago, and this happened before I updated the plugin. I did the update in case that was the issue, but it is still happening. Also hosted at GoDaddy.

@csib85 You’ve done a great job troubleshooting so far. Since the issues persist on a staging site with an old version of your site, it does suggest that the problem might be server-related, despite GoDaddy’s assurance.

Based on the description, it seems like there could be a few different factors causing these problems.

Timeouts at checkout: Although your host might not have made any changes, it’s possible that your site’s increased traffic or changes in the content could be causing the server to hit its limit.
Emails not sending: If the emails appear in WP Mail Log, it means WooCommerce is doing its part in sending them. The issue might be with the server’s mail function. You mentioned that other emails are sending fine, which is puzzling. I would recommend trying an SMTP plugin like WP Mail SMTP to bypass the server’s mail function and see if that resolves the issue.
503 Service Unavailable error: This is typically a server-side error, often due to a lack of available server resources.

Here are things I recommend:

Check your server error logs for any clues. Kindly share with us the following:
– System Status Report: navigate to WooCommerce → Status. Select Get system report and then Copy for support.
Fatal Error log: Share a copy of any fatal error log found under WooCommerce → Status → Logs.
Increase your server’s PHP memory limit.
Contact GoDaddy and ask them to check if there are any limitations on your hosting account that might be causing these issues.

Before you start

We recommend taking a complete backup of your site before proceeding with any changes, you could consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site.

Thank you for your quick response, Darla. I have the system report so I’ll paste it here. This site is un’Managed’ WordPress, and I cannot do core updates, so we are using 6.2.2. They will update when they are ready. The processes were running fine 3 days ago and so I don’t see this as being an issue.

We had 1 log file from 2 weeks ago (before this issue was reported to me) but when I click ‘View’ it shows nothing.

Our site is on the same “Managed WordPress” plan with godaddy so is also running WP Version 6.2.2. We had no problems running on this version until a few days ago. As both the sites being discussed started experiencing this issue at exactly the same time and are on the same hosting platform, it would certainly seem to point to a server issue.

The hosting plan we are on far exceeds our usage and we havn’t had any sudden spikes in visitors so it shouldn’t be a problem with traffic. I reached out to Godaddy again and they were less than helpful, just tried to upsell me additional services.

Well it does appear that Managed Hosting accounts at GoDaddy are having this same issue:

I know this is a solicitation to buy WP Mail SMTP, which I have used other places, but it does bypass GoDaddy’s mail server. It also requires spending more money to fix this. I plan to contact GoDaddy and see what their story is today. Just wanted to share in case anyone wants to pursue this route.

I spoke with GoDaddy today and asked to be put through to their higher tier tech support. They confirmed it was an issue on their servers which they have known about since Tuesday and was resolved on Friday. Frustrating that this was apparently not communicated to the 3 tech support representatives I spoke to before then.

Everything on our site now seems to be working normally and emails are being delivered. Marking as resolved.

I entered a support question on the GoDaddy Pro system yesterday and got a similar response this morning. It appears we may be working now as well, but I am waiting to hear from the client whether all intended parties got the notification. We had 2 orders placed yesterday so I need to make sure they went through in email. Good to know you are back in business! Also good to know I was not imagining this issue!
