We are trying to set WP SMTP with Office365 smtp server. The settings are saved ok, but trying to send a test email message, after hitting “Send Test”, the page hangs for about 3 minutes and then returns an error message 504 gateway timeout.
Could you please advise what may cause this, or any idea how to troubleshoot it?
Another oddity: The error message reads “Nginx”, even though our account is hosted on Apache…

From my experience – incorrect settings of the plugin. I saw similar problems when an incorrect port was used. Also, some hosting companies (like Bluehost) provide own host/port/username/password/encryption/authentication, when you register for G Apps or Office365 through them.
So please try to contact your host support team and request correct SMTP credentials.

Thanks! My host is Siteground, and they don’t suggest any special settings on their part. I used some settings that were recommended here:

I wish I would have at least got an error message. The timeout issue is really hard to get around… :-\.

I host with SiteGround as well, and I’m getting the same 504 Gateway Timeout error when sending a test email using the plugin.

I had a user here on a forum saying, that Siteground support had to open some port to work with office365. So try to contact them regarding this.

That person had a bit different error (not a timeout), but it’s worth a try.

Yes, the web server must have port 587 open for sending SMTP mail using Office365 email accounts (smtp.office365.com).
