I am wanting to use ewww to optimise my jpg files, but i keep getting a timeout error. I have modified the location of the wordpress upload folder to be on a subdomain and not in the wp-contect folder to increase page loading times. I am assuming this is whats causing the error. Is there a way to fix this?

That is unlikely to be the cause of a 504 error. That usually means your site is behind a proxy/CDN, and the proxy gave up on the response from your server. Try turning off parallel optimization and see if that changes anything.
