A path/database/siteurl issue

This is my first attempt at installing a wordpress blog and things are not going well.

When I first installed WordPress on my server, no styles could be found and therefore it would just appear as paragraphs of text.

I went into the mysql database using my hosts control panel and edited the “siteurl” field by removing the ?step=2 from the end of the url.

This worked and for the first time I could view the homepage and the cms. After looking around the CMS for a while I tried adding content to the “About” page but once I’d updated it, clicking the link from the homepage did nothing, in fact I cannot view any pages except the homepage. Obviously the ?step=2 is essential to generating a page structure but I have no idea how to make this work.
