A Query

Hi guys,
Just ran one of my websites through GTMetrix, and most of the images on there are showing as .jpg.
How can I ensure that the .webp version is used for images?

Hi @deeveearr!
Could you please have a look at this article? I’m sure it will be useful: https://help.shortpixel.com/article/286-how-to-serve-webp-files-using-spio
Cheers!
Yes, I read the article before.
I made sure that in the advanced settings, both
'Also create WebP versions of the images, with the additional cost of 1 credit = 1 image or thumbnail'
and
'Deliver the next generation versions of the images in the front-end'
are checked, which they have been for over a year now.In the second of these settings,
'Using the <PICTURE> tag syntax'
and
'Only via WordPress hooks (like the_content, the_excerpt, etc)'
are also checked, as they have been for over a year, as they were the recommended options back then.I did notice that there’s a new recommended option now, of
'Without altering the page code (via .htaccess). This option will insert a new block of code into the .htaccess file. This is the recommended option (but incompatible with your CDN)'
but as I use Cloudflare, I don’t use this last option. Finally, checking on developer tools confirms that the majority of my images are NOT .webp, and remain as jpg’s or png’s
There should really be an easier way to do this, especially as I’m now having to pay for .webp images, which never get used on my website.
Better than that – here’s a screenshot for the developer tools on the website:
As you can see, there are a lot of .webp images at the top, which are partner websites logos.
Other than that though, maybe two of the remaining images are published as .webp
Hi @deeveearr,
Thank you for that.
Without knowing your website, we cannot really tell what may be happening, so I would recommend to try an alternative method to serve your WebP files, like ShortPixel Adaptive Images. For more information, please take a look at this document: https://help.shortpixel.com/article/49-generate-webp-mark-up-option-doesnt-work
Best,
You’ve already checked out the website, and it’s at midlandsmaidens(dot)com
So if I start using SPAI, seeing as all of the images were originally shrunk using ShortPixel, and there are probably over 3000 images in various blog posts, staff members, galleries and such, do I get a free credit to optimize these, as SPAI only gives you 500mb of image optimization credits?
Another quick point:
I just downloaded SPAI, and I.m getting this message at the top:
Please deactivate the LiteSpeed Cache's JS Combine option when the ShortPixel Adaptive Images plugin is active.I’m not using Litespeed Cache, rather I’m using WP Rocket.
Does that mean I need to turn off WP Rocket’s JS Combine option?
This is actually a bit of a nightmare.
Now ALL of the images are showing as jpg, png, gif etc, meaning that I’ve lost everything that I’ve done before.
I’m going to apply a server backup to retrieve the .webp images, then I’m going to have to look elsewhere for something that delivers .webp images.
Backup done and back to normal now.
Weirdest thing I noticed, is how ShortPixel and SPAI are not compatible with each other, with having to delete or deactivate certain features in order to make the other plugin work properly.
Just a quick notice here:
When SPAI was enabled, I tried clicking onto the admin bar for the cool(ish if it worked) photo/picture editor that is supposed to convert images on the website to .webp without you having to go through the media files to find them.
As you can probably gather from above, of the seven or so images that I tried, none of them worked and they remained as .jpgs.
Hi deeveearr,
Sorry to hear you had some issues with ShortPixel Adaptive Images :-(. I can assure you SPAI and SPIO are compatible with each other, so to keep things clean, I would like to kindly ask you to open a new support thread on SPAI’s support forums: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/plugin/shortpixel-adaptive-images/
Thank you!
Sorry, but I found that SPAI didn’t work, and in addition you needed to pay for the cdn to boot, and it holds no sway for me.
As I said earlier, I’ll just look elsewhere unless Shortpixel can get their .webp images to work.
Hi deeveear,
I understand. ShortPixel Adaptive Images doesn’t require to pay unless you have a high traffic.
In any case, since this is the support forum for ShortPixel Image Optimizer, I can tell you that midlandsmaidens(dot)com doesn’t serve all images as WebP because most of the images are background images: if your images are loaded via CSS with the property “background-image”, ShortPixel Image optimizer will not be able to replace them.
So in your case, you have four options:
– using the second WebP delivery option: Without altering the page code (via .htaccess)
– if you have an NGINX server, you can serve your WebP files in a different way: https://help.shortpixel.com/article/111-configure-nginx-to-transparently-serve-webp-files-when-supported
– using another plugin to deliver the WebP files created by ShortPixel, like Cache Enabler
– replacing ShortPixel Image Optimizer with ShortPixel Adaptive ImagesI hope that helps!
Using the second option via .htaccess would not work, as I have Cloudflare enabled.
I’m using an apache server, so the NGINX idea wouldn’t work.
I’ve already tried SPAI and images do not appear as .webp.
Which leaves the third option, using cache enabler.
Problem with that is, that I’m already using WP Rocket for my caching system – how does Cache Enabler perform with WP Rocket enabled?
Good morning deeveearr,
Regarding SPAI, I’m sure there’s some configuration issue, that can easily be solved, so feel free to open a new thread on SPAI’s support forums if you are willing to give it another try 🙂 https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/plugin/shortpixel-adaptive-images/
Regarding WP Rocket, that’s great! Because WP Rocket can also serve WebP files. Simply disable the WebP delivery on ShortPixel (not the generation) and enable it on WP Rocket: https://docs.wp-rocket.me/article/1282-webp
If you need more help with WP Rocket, you should then contact their support team.
Have a good one!
