For what it’s worth, WordPress requires PHP 5.2.4 as of WP 3.2 (released in July 2011). filter_var has been available since PHP 5.2.0 so there’s really no need to check if it exists 🙂

Hey Spinal– thanks for the feedback. We added it in after receiving support requests– in the interest of backwards compatibility, we decided to put it in.
