How do I add the ‘about me’ widget in the sidebar? I’d like to add a picture as well.

You can use Easy Profile Widget plugin.

We had to remove the Author widget from the free version of this theme for the theme review here at ww.wp.xz.cn. You can use a plugin as mentioned or upgrade to a paid membership at alienwp.com and use that version.
