I have the option ‘Show access restrictions for these post types’ checked for ‘media’ and on media I can indeed add groups, but when I use the url of a media file I can still open it whether or not I’m logged in. Do I need to do something else to restrict access?

I’ve added an htaccess file to the uploads folder for now.

Thanks for asking about this. Your approach with the .htaccess file seems appropriate as long as you protect the specific files. Another option is to use the Groups File Access extension – https://www.itthinx.com/shop/groups-file-access/ – for particular files that are maintained outside of the media library. The extension won’t be protecting the files in the media library either, but uses its own folder.

It would however be great if we could protect the very files in the media library individually, that’s something on the to-do list …

Marking as resolved, but if you have any suggestions or questions related to this, please feel free to comment further.
