Our installation guide does include some troubleshooting steps around getting a valid free key along with a step-by-step video if you’ve not already tried them: https://www.wordfence.com/help/api-key/#installing-your-free-license-key
If you’re still getting an error after checking the above information, you should still have access to the Wordfence > Tools menu to send us a diagnostic report so we can take a closer look at things like communication issues with our servers. You can send that to us at wftest @ wordfence . com. Click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.
NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email
