Add a margin below the header

    Hi.

    I’m new to WordPress and coding. I’m trying to do something basic but I can’t figure it out. I’ve added a slider to my front page, I put a short code for the slider in in the content-index.php file of the child theme and that works. Now I would like a margin between the top menu and the slider but I don’t know the code or where to put it.
    I tried to add 

    html {
margin-top: 20px;
}

    to content-index.php before the slider short code but then the code just appears above the slider.

    Can someone please help me with the correct code and where to put it? Thanks.
