add menu item

How do I add a menu item to the wordpress menu on the left in the dashboard? I am changing themes and not all the elements transferred. In the old theme we had a menu item called teachers, where I would add new teachers. When I transferred to the new theme, the teachers page did not transfer. Now you go to staff and it’s empty. Please help!!!!
