I am trying to add a header widget area to our customizr child theme. If anyone can walk me through step by step on how to do this that would be great. Thank you!

This links might give you an idea on what to do:

Add a widget area after the header

or

Add qTranslate flags with a navbar widget

When I went to the function.php file in our child theme it was blank and I added the code from the first link above. when I did this the code then appeared at the top of my page with no way to edit it in the widget area. Not sure what I need to do to fix this.
