Admin login failed after switching hosting server

    I had to change hosting and I copied full WP content and database to new provider server. Page content is visible and works fine but I can’t login to WP dashboard. Wordfence was set to use P2A code but there is no proper filed to put it in while logging. Only following error appears:
    ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.

    I also tried to disable Wordfence plugin by changing folder name, but it doesn’t help. Then I got HTTP Error 500.

    I’ve found that .user.ini file block my dashboard login. I could login only when .user.ini file was disabled/removed.

    Maybe there is special procedure when site content has to be moved to different hosting server which I need to perform.

    Hi @mwb310, thanks for reaching out.

    Renaming the Wordfence folder should certainly work to disable 2FA that was active from a previous server, which would probably have different times and offsets. This was the correct thing to try and would be OK if you weren’t receiving the other error.

    The 500 error that occurs and link with the .user.ini file you’ve found sounds like the auto_prepend_file line in your .user.ini (also can be set in .htaccess) may be looking for the wordfence-waf.php file in the old server’s location. When Wordfence is optimized, the path to your wordfence-waf.php file is not likely to ever be the same as a previous hosting platform.

    Manually altering the path to point to the correct location or removing the line entirely and re-optimizing the firewall using our wizard are your two best options.
