    Greetings! Overall, I love MailPoet.

The only trouble I have had is that, for reasons I cannot even guess at, my husband has been repeatedly unsubscribed from one of our newsletters. He subscribed because he wanted to receive each of the emails we send out, but every time we go to send one, he doesn’t get it. We check and, lo and behold, he is again listed as “unsubscribed”. He has never once clicked the “Unsubscribe” link.

I don’t know if there is any additional information I need to provide in order to diagnose the problem. The only other thing I can think of is that, as far as we know, this has not happened to anyone else. It certainly has not happened to me (I get every single email without fail).

I hope this problem can be resolved. I don’t know if we could remember to make sure it hasn’t happened again before sending every email. This last time was just today, yet the email he supposedly unsubscribed from was sent out over a week ago. I just can’t figure out any reason for this at all.

    Hi there @goldmare,

Very glad to hear that! : )

Just to check, are you using WooCommerce on your site, and does your husband ever place orders (either test orders or real orders) on the site prior to noticing that he is unsubscribed?

If he used the same email address during checkout on the site, and did not check (or unchecked) the opt-in checkbox on the Checkout page, then that could explain why he becomes unsubscribed.

Also, if you click to view his subscriber under MailPoet > Subscribers, do you see any notes/history at the bottom of his profile page?

    Hello there @goldmare ,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.

    Have a great day

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you! For some reason, it seems like I didn’t get an email notification for Kelly’s response, only Ojoma’s.

We do have WooCommerce, but my husband has never placed an order through our store.

Oh, I should have included the subscriber history information from the start. It says that he unsubscribed from newsletters he received (repeatedly), except that he never did that. In fact, it’s impossible, since the last one was before 5am and he’s not even awake that early! This is what it looks like:

    Hi there @goldmare,

Thanks for getting back to us!

If you go to MailPoet > Subscribers and click on your husband statistics, do you see any weird activity there? Like a lot of clicks on the same links or clicks on all links in certain email?

It’s not possible for us to determine what is clicking these links because these links are not stored on our end and they exist only in the newsletters you sent, but here are some of my guesses:

    • your email server/email client/antivirus follows the Unsubscribe links in the headers of old emails to check them for phishing and make sure the destination URL is the same as in the email itself;
    • there were some cases where unsubscribe links “leaked” to some search engine bots and they kept visiting them.

The only 100% way to resolve it without finding the root cause is to recreate your subscriber from scratch because then the Unsubscribe links won’t be linked to them anymore even if clicked again. You need to go to MailPoet > Subscribers > delete this subscriber, then completely remove it from Trash and then recreate. If it’s a WordPress user, you should delete this WordPress user and then recreate it from wp-admin > Users.

If you want to dig deeper, you can try to search the access log for links containing mailpoet_router&endpoint=subscription&action=unsubscribe and check how they were accessed on the day when your husband has been unsubscribed. This can be done by your hosting company.

    Hope it helps!
