When I click on the link it brings up a screen that says I need Adobe Reader.

Will the Google Document Embedder open and view a “Portfolio File”?

You’ll have to try a portfolio file in Google’s standalone viewer first to see if it’s supported:

https://docs.google.com/viewer

If it doesn’t work there, it won’t work in GDE, either.

I get the message”For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat X or Adobe Reader X, or later.”

This appears to be a “feature” of the portfolio format for readers that aren’t capable of opening portfolio PDFs. Since I’m seeing that directly on Google Viewer, it appears it (and therefore GDE) does not support this format of PDF at this time.
