• Hi there,

is there any reason why you need to decide whether to use AVIF or WebP? Why not both? Since AVIF is usually superior, I want to use it. But not all browsers we need to support, support this format, so we’re stuck with WebP.

Through the picture source tags, we could already serve both formats without a hassle.

See this as official feature request allowing generating both formats and serving them (AVIF as preferred variant).

    Best regards,
    Matthias

    Hi Matthias,

Thank you for your message and suggestion!

We understand the appeal of serving both AVIF and WebP formats, especially considering AVIF’s superior compression capabilities. However, there are a couple of reasons why Imagify currently allows the selection of only one format at a time:

    1. Storage and File Management: For each image and thumbnail, Imagify generates an additional WebP or AVIF version based on your selection. This results in two new images for every original one. When we previously offered simultaneous generation of WebP and AVIF, many users faced significant storage issues due to the increased number of image files.
    2. Wide Acceptance of WebP: While AVIF is gaining traction, WebP remains the more universally supported format across browsers. A large portion of our user base still chooses WebP for its compatibility with various platforms and browsers.

That said, once all your images are optimized with WebP selected, you can switch to AVIF in the settings, and Imagify will start generating AVIF versions for the same images. This way, you can gradually adopt AVIF while still retaining WebP support.

Finally, as per your request, I’ve added your suggestion to our feature request list for further consideration by our team.

Let me know if you have any additional questions or feedback!

    Best regards,
