alter the user defined post count

Hello eyeryone

I’m searching for a way to alter the user defined max post count by an arithmetic operation. I’m working on a photo portfolio theme where the user can highlight the newest post via an backend option, which stretches only the newest post over 2 “fields”. Which makes it necessary to show one post less than the user defined in the backend on the affected page.
